The Lakes Area offers a few good playgrounds for muskie fishing. Pelican Lake, West Battle, and Beers lake are among the top detestations in Minnesota for trophy hunting musky. With over 9,805 acres to explore, you will never run out of real estate to explore!
The Musky is a top line predator in our Minnesota lakes. With the average size being in the mid 40 inch mark, you can see why they are top of the food chain. The musky diet consists of perch, sunfish, suckers, cisco's and even walleyes. Muskies can live up to 18 years.
Musky movement is based on their basic needs throughout the year. In the spring, these apex predictors start to spawn in backwater mucky areas. Typically, when the water hits 55 degrees. After the rigorous spawn muskies go straight to the fastest / easiest food available. Although this depends on the lake. For most lakes this will be perch grounds or shiner spawning areas. After replenishing, there are two different patterns that happen.
1) the bigger fish move out to open water in search of oil-based fish.
2) there is a big movement of fish that move into fast-growing weeds to find their summer homes.
As fall approaches, muskies begin to put the feed bags on by condensing on break lines in search of big bait to pack on the pounds for winter.
